Before you jump into a business, think about what you want from life. Most people who start businesses just end up making new jobs for themselves. They've traded their old boss for a new one: themselves. And because they don't get to clock out at the end of the day, as they would in a normal job, they end up working harder and longer hours than ever before. We want to be able to set our own hours and take a day off when we feel like it. To my mind, that is a far greater fortune than all the money I've earned or all the money I may earn in the future.
Figure out what you want your life to look like, and then figure out how to build a business that will get you there. If you create the business first, you may be chasing freedom and happiness for the rest of your life.

Pop over this and you will have cleared your first fence! It's now up to you and your riding instructor to decide how much higher you should go during the rest of your course.

You may worry that your horse is not a 'jumper.'

A good dive can slice those all important seconds and miliseconds off your time, and could make the difference between winning and losing your race. Being right at the beginning of your race, a good racing start can give you a great psychological advantage, putting your competitors in the race on the back foot right from the starting gun. This article will describe the different racing starts available to choose from and help you to learn how to perform a racing dive off a starting block in swimming effectively.
There are three types of racing starts used in competitive swimming. Scientific studies have conflicting results as to which is the best racing start, so it is really down to individual preference and personal skill set as to which dive the swimmer chooses.
The first type of racing start is called the track start because it is closest to the type of racing start used in the track and field world, with one foot in front of the other. The toes of the front foot will be just curled over the front edge of the starting block. The hands need to be placed on the starting block with the fingers lightly gripping the edge. The swimmer keeps his or her weight on the front leg, uses the arms to pull down on the block and then flexes both knees to push off with the legs.
The second type of racing start is an adaptation of the track start and is called the Slingshot or Rear-Weighted Track Start. The set up is the same as in the track start. However, this time, the swimmer's weight needs to be on the back leg, which will flex down low in order to gain maximum spring off the block when performing the dive. As in the track start, the swimmer will use both legs to push off the starting block.
The third type of racing start is called the grab start and is different from the first two starts in that it has both feet together. The swimmer positions his feet 15-30cm apart with the toes curled over the edge of the starting block. The swimmer's centre of gravity should be as far forward as possible, without risking toppling into the water. The hands should grasp the front of the starting block, helping with stability. On hearing the starter's pistol, the hands pull downward and let go of the block, while at the same time the swimmer pushes off with both legs to perform the dive.
Whichever racing start you are doing the techniques are very similar:
Start by focusing on the front of the starting block. As you start the dive, move your head up and look at where you are aiming to enter the water. Target a point a little further than where you expect to make your entry, as you should be pushing yourself to achieve the maximum you possibly can right from the start of the race.
When you make your jump, push as hard as you can with your hands off the starting blocks. Then quickly thrust your arms straight above your head with your hands together, aiming for that same point mentioned in point 1. - a little further than where you thought you could achieve.
Naturally, try to jump as hard as you can. Studies of elite swimmers have shown that they typically take off at an angle of -5 degrees to 10 degrees, suggesting that a flat take-off profile would not be misguided.
Your feet should be together with the toes pointed, to keep the dive streamlined and minimise drag.
Your angle of entry into the water should be between 30 degrees and 40 degrees.
Aim to dive under the water no more than 1 to 2 feet to minimise drag forces. A common mistake of those learning racing starts is to dive as much as double or triple that distance.
Once you have dived in, if doing freestyle - also known as front crawl - you should aim to energetically kick your legs for about 5 to 10 yards or metres before surfacing and starting to propel your arms. In recent years, the dolphin kick has become the freestyle underwater kick of choice in competitive swimming, over the more traditional flutter kick.

It's important to be one hundred percent sure because boosting a battery that doesn't need a boost can potentially damage the battery. Keep a set of jumper cables close by in the event that you will have to use them when you get stuck. You never know when you might need them, and they're not that easy to come by once you're stuck on the road. If you're stuck, you should wait for emergency personnel to come by and help you. But most of the time the people that will come and help you are everyday drivers. Once you find someone to give you a boost, have them park next to your car, or if possible, in front of your car. Open both hoods of both cars and locate the batteries. If you are unsure, consult the owner's manual. You might get confused by assuming it is under the hood, because in some cars it is located in a different spot amidst the engine, or even in the trunk. Before you start connecting jumper cables, make sure there are no leaks. Hydrogen gas can be emitted as a battery starts to lose its fluid and this can become very dangerous. It is flammable and that can cause fires, or even an explosion. If there are leaks or other visible damage to the battery, DO NOT JUMP START IT! Always make sure that in order to get the proper juice to power the dead battery, check that the clasps are placed properly and securely. Turn on the car with the dead battery. Make sure that it turns on smoothly. If not, leave the jumper cables on a while longer. After the car starts working again, take the jumper cables off; each color respectively. Make sure that the caps that protect the terminals are placed back on to secure the battery from damage. The last thing you need to do is keep the car running for a few minutes and drive it around the block to make sure the car is getting the power it needs and that the battery can work on its own after you turn the car off. If you can't turn the car on after that, the issue could be with an alternator or the battery may just be too old to use any longer.
Your battery should be running well after following these steps. In some cases you might have a jump starter unit that can boost the battery without using another car. If so, follow the steps concerning the placing of the clasps on the terminals and charge as necessary. A jump starter pack should come with an instruction manual to illustrate how it should be used.

Have you decided to start your own business? The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has some specific requests you need to fulfill when starting a new business. The act of writing down your purpose (mission plan), your goals, your strengths, and your weaknesses is more than just a silly, time-consuming exercise. But then, drill down to the nitty-gritty. How soon do you expect to make money in your planned endeavor? How much do you expect in initial profits in the next three months? By the end of the year? Are you offering a product or services? Will you carry inventory? Do you plan to work alone or is this a joint venture with a partner? Do you expect to hire employees?
Believe it or not, this exercise forces you to answer fundamental "startup" questions critical to any business venture including revenue (read here as taxable) flows and accounting methods that are of significant interest to the IRS! The kind of business entity you choose determines how you file taxes; a sole proprietorship (Form 1040 Schedule C), a partnership (Form 1065), an S corporation (Form 1120S), or a C corporation (Form 1120). Whether or not you provide services or goods, whether you maintain an inventory, and how you do "your business" determines accounting method and taxes; whether income, self-employment, employment, or excise taxes. Consider income taxes as another variable expense. Your projections of revenue determine how soon you need to make estimated or payroll withholding payments.
There are a series of tax-related question you need to address BEFORE your first tax filing. Issues such as calendar year versus fiscal year, startup costs, and start date can be strategic decisions. A fundamental issue to address, for example, is what form of tax identification you will use. Just like your own Social Security Number, an Employer Identification Number (EIN), a nine-digit number, is necessary to identify your business, whether you are a sole proprietor, partnership, or corporation, on all tax forms (and/or payments) you submit to the IRS. Think of it as a business tax account number. You are required to have one when you hire employees for cross-checking employee tax payments and withholdings. You can apply for an EIN online using Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number, at the IRS website, irs.gov/businesses/, under Employer ID Numbers. You can immediately use this number to file a tax return or submit payment. A follow up mailing will confirm your permanent EIN and will typically show the date for filing your annual tax return. If a return or payment is due and, for whatever reason, you have not received an EIN you have applied for, do NOT use a substitute number like a social security number in the EIN space on IRS forms. Carefully print "Applied For" and the date you submitted your request in the space on tax forms you submit to the IRS and follow-up your unanswered request by contacting the tax authority.
Choose a record-keeping system that is best suited for your business and your management team. Consider the burden in keeping both accounting records and organizational resolutions especially if you decide to file as a partnership or corporation.
But even if you decide to work as a sole proprietor, don't underestimate the fact that completing a IRS 1040 Schedule C, while less formal, typically requires a fair amount of detail. Avoid using rounded numbers and "guess-timates" as a substitute for your actual expenses. A Schedule C raises your "audit risk"; expenses that are "round numbers" like 0 or 0 even if legitimate, increase suspicion. Never forget: ANY number you include on a tax return needs supporting documentation. Your time is valuable. Consider a computerized accounting system for handling payment of bills and reconciliation of checking accounts. If your audit risk is high, consider a daily business journal for chronological details such as mileage and meetings. If you do not handle inventory in your chosen line of work, the cash method of accounting is the most natural and simplest approach to handling financial affairs. This method is where you report income and expenses at the time of the financial transaction. The alternative method, using an accrual basis, records transactions when they occur; sales are recorded today but cash is paid on delivery AND recorded thirty days from say, tomorrow. You can choose a hybrid accounting system (accrual for inventory, cash for everything else) if you need to maintain an inventory.
Seek advice from a tax advisor regarding how you want or plan to receive compensation for your financial venture; your sweat, your money, your time. Some business entities like C corporations handle compensation to shareholders differently than others. C corporations, defined under subchapter C of the IRS Code, pay corporate taxes on recorded profits. An S corporation, defined under subchapter S of the IRS Code, does not pay corporate taxes but instead, passes profits to shareholders. The shareholder handles corporate proceeds on their personal income tax returns. Compare these and other significant tax differences carefully before you decide to file paperwork with your federal and state tax authorities as, for example, a sole proprietor, partnership, or corporation. Plan all aspects of your business carefully and seek as much professional help as possible before you make strategic errors.

The drill set up is a mat or place on the field with 5 dots about a foot away from each other forming an X shape, exactly in the same shape as you would see diamonds arranged on a number five card in a poker deck.
This drill begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge dots separating their feet. Next the player will jump touching each dot with on leg only, and then switch using the other leg. Then continue around the dots with both legs together. The last step is the same as the first hop scotch method but this time when the player reaches the other side they will turn around on the two dots. Because this drill is intended for accuracy and speed, it is recommended that players start out slow and deliberate and then speed up to their maximum time.

Conditioning in football is meant to help you react quickly on the field moving in a variety of directions. This practice drill is intended to increase reaction speed and the ability to quickly change directions. Bottom line: To properly diagnose a charging system problem, you must check all components on the vehicle. Your mechanic can test the battery "load", the alternator "output", and check for a voltage "draw" or something draining the battery with the engine and key off.

It was "Pomp and Circumstance" once more this spring as we attended another college graduation. This time, my 19-year-old son was graduating with his bachelor's degree in Computer Science. In less than a month, he would start his new position as an Assistant Technical Analyst in a Fortune 500 corporation. But wait... at nineteen, isn't he supposed to be starting college?
I don't know about you, but I've never seen the point in wasting time. I was always the kid who read ahead in class, finished homework before leaving school for the day, and saw no point in filling out sixteen workbook pages on a concept I already knew. When it came to educating my four boys, I've taken a similar approach. Once the basics of a subject are mastered, they can move ahead as quickly as they like, earning college credit while still in high school. Why not?

Although traditional education has decreed that primary and secondary education should take twelve or thirteen years to complete, there is no good reason to spend that amount of time, unless you want to.

The most compelling benefits of earning college credit during high school include increased credibility for the homeschool transcript, and a dramatic savings in the time and money needed to obtain a college degree. Credibility: Show What You Know While diversity is one of homeschooling's greatest assets, it can also be perceived as a liability. Pity the poor college admissions officer who has to wade through hundreds of applications and transcripts each week! When dealing with an accredited public or private school, he knows there is an objective system for assigning grades. When dealing with a homeschooler's application, though, he has no idea how objectively or by what standards grades are assigned. It makes it difficult to measure a homeschooler against someone who has been traditionally schooled.
So how can a student measurably and credibly demonstrate his learning? A parent-created high school transcript is a start, but it won't tell the whole story, unless it shows results from standardized tests or grades from sources other than the parent. When an admission officer sees on a transcript that a homeschooled student has taken English Literature and earned a 'B,' he has no way of knowing the scope and depth of the student's work. However, if the transcript lists a standardized test score or college grade along with the parent-granted grade, the admissions officer immediately has a better picture of what the student has studied and how well he understood the material. Save Time: Turn Study Hours into Credit Hours I recently read that it is taking students longer than ever to earn a four-year college degree. Some students are juggling jobs and school, while others have had difficulty settling on a major. Imagine what an advantage a student would have if he or she entered college with a year or two of college credit that was accumulated during the high school years! This credit cushion would provide several wonderful options. The student could:

* Spend a year exploring classes that look interesting
* Opt for a double major

By learning deeply and purposefully, and investing a little time in testing or college classes during high school, you can make the most of the high school years, and open doors to many interesting opportunities.

Classes usually cost considerably less than 0 per credit hour, and most exams cost less than 0 for three to six credits. Compared with community college classes, which are reasonable enough, exams come out way ahead, unless your state pays for community college classes when they are taken as a dual-credit option.
Why College-Level Exams? There are two benefits you can earn with exams such as the AP, CLEP, or DSST - advanced placement (also known as "testing out" of otherwise required classes), or actual college credit. The decision as to which benefit to grant rests with the college you choose, but either way, you add credibility to your transcript and save both time and money by taking them.
The beauty of exams is that they don't cause a lot of extra work. Any high-school subject can be broadened and deepened to college-level, especially a subject in which the student has a natural interest. The exams measure whether a student has acquired knowledge and understanding that is approximately comparable to what he would learn in an introductory-level college course. If a student loves a subject and has read extensively on his own, he may be ready to pass a college-level exam without much further study.

You can take exams whenever you're ready - there's no age limit. They're cheaper than most other ways of earning college credit. Try College (with Training Wheels) Your local community college or junior college offers another option for earning credit in classes, such as lab sciences, that are difficult to manage at home. It's like college with training wheels-most students commute, many are first-generation college students, and classes are often designed to bring these students up to speed so they can transfer to a four-year college if they wish. The application process is simple; tuition is usually much lower than at a four-year school; and students can begin by trying just one or two classes at a time with no long-term commitment.
I've heard of students as young as 10 years old being admitted, but most schools prefer that students be 13 or older. My sons started taking classes when they were 15 or 16, and it has been a very positive experience for all of them. Both of my older sons completed associate's degrees, then transferred to four-year schools to complete their bachelor's. It's really nice to be graduating from college, when other people your age are graduating from high school!
An Opportunity and a Challenge As outsiders in the education establishment, homeschoolers sometimes face a credibility gap. While this needn't affect our educational choices, it's nice to be able to go above and beyond the ordinary in providing objective proof of learning. College-level exams and community college classes are cheap, accessible ways of earning college credit and proving that homeschoolers can teach themselves nearly anything they want to know.
